Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial is a cemetery and chapel between the villages of Coton and Madingley in Cambridgeshire, England. Referred to by many as “Madingley”, it was opened in 1956, and commemorates American servicemen and women who died in World War II including many who served in the 385th Bomb Group. This Cemetery is the closest to Great Ashfield (location of the 385th’s base of operations) of the American Military cemeteries in Europe.

Memorial Day 2019: On Memorial Day members of my family and I laid a wreath at Madingley on behalf of the 385th Bomb Group Association. Attached are a few photographs.
It was, as always, a very moving occasion made the more poignant with this year being the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Sue and I also had an all-to-brief reunion with Ken Underwood whose father is buried at Madingley and who kindly allowed me to use his story in one of my books. With the opening of the visitor center, Madingley has done so much in recent years to help tell the stories of those buried or commemorated there and the American Battle Monuments Commission – staff and volunteers – are to be congratulated. — Ian McLachlan
